Herb Remington (1926-2018) was one of the great steel guitar players of the post-WWII era, an influential stylist whose lap steel playing graced numerous sessions, and whose solo instrumental albus were pored over by generations of steel players to come. Born in Mishawaka, Indiana, Remington was a musical prodigy, learning guitar in his pre-teens, then switching to lap steel after being swept up after his first exposure to Hawaiian hapa haole music. Straight out of high school, Remington traveled to California looking for work as a musician, and discovered country gigs were easier to find than Hawaiian ones. He played with Ray Whitley's band for a short time before getting drafted to fight in World War Two; after he demobilized in 1946 he landed a plum spot in a pared-down West Coast edition of Bob Will's Texas Playboys and soon emerged as one of western swing's major solo stylists. He soon jumped over to Hank Penny's band and recorded a number of highly regarded instrumental albums, and composed several tunes that have become standards of instrumental country music. Remington also worked steadily as a studio musician in the '60s and '70s. Many of his solo sets have been reissued on specialty labels aimed at steel guitar fans... Here's a quick look at his work...
